Minivan Blues: How did Chris become Caspar Babypants?

Caspar Babypants: Well Caspar was an OLD nickname that I had in the early 90s that I sort of gave myself because I was kind of bored with Chris as a first name. I tried to change it but ran into a hard time when I tried to get my family to call me Caspar. The Babypants part came from a hat I had in Boston one winter that was a hand knitted pair of baby’s pants. The kids in the neighborhood started calling me Babypants so I put the two together and Caspar Babypants was born. Then many years later when I started making kids music I remembered that I already had the perfect name waiting for me! So I have ALWAYS been Caspar Babypants I just didnt know it.

MB: The three blind mice do the “Boogaloo.” My boys are dying to know what a Boogaloo is.

CB: It’s a dance I think! Or at least i am using it to indicate that they are dancing all night. Those mice decided to just give up and dance after they lost their tails I guess!

MB: What is that piano that you blow like a horn??? Where can I get my hands on one of those?

CB: That is called a MELODICA and they should be available at most music stores but I would start with music stores that carry a good assortment of acoustic instruments. I love that thing and I use it instead of horns on a bunch of my recordings. It also sounds like a harmonica to me.

MB: What musical styles most inspire you, and why?

CB: I am most inspired by old American folk and African spiritual music from the late 1800s and early 1900s. There is this rich wellspring of timeless universal rhythms and imagery in those songs that I am really enjoying getting to know and listen to and they are creeping into my music more and more. I love to take an old song and twist it a little bit and make it my own. That is how music used to pass through culture before recordings and I think it makes the tunes that survived stronger. That timeless vibe helps make the music easy to listen to over and over for the kids AND the parents I think.

MB: Favorite concert moment?

CB: Yesterday I played at a party and there was a kids that responded every time I finished a verse of the song Fuzzy Wuzzy with a comment about the verse and I just had a little conversation with him between each verse. I love that random freedom that kids bring to a show.
