This is so rad. I usually ignore these vending machines like the plague, because they are normally filled with nasty five year old candies, not to mention all of the hands that reach in and attempt to grab said candies. Nothing good comes out of these machines…. until today.
Whole Foods, here is another example of why I heart you. First, some background. We live in LA. My kids see graffiti and people littering on a daily basis. We try to make the most of it. We pick up trash on the ground even when it doesn’t belong to us, and make a point of talking about how much the graffiti bothers us every single time we get on the freeway.
But. This. Is. Awesome. The idea behind a Seed Bomb is throwing seeds into a vacant lot so that something good and beautiful can grow from nothing. It really makes my kids feel empowered when they chuck a Seed Bomb with all of their might, and talk about beautifying our city with nature. It isn’t just a Free City sweatshirt slogan. Although we love those. (Free City also has these super cool vending machines, so… mad props!)
I must admit.. it is pretty disheartening to see the same taggers hit the freshly painted columns under the freeway. My boys notice it. “Why do people want to hurt other people’s feelings?” (God Bless schools that emphasize Reggio Emilia and getting in touch with our feelings). I don’t always have the answers. But, now…
I have Seed Bombs.
(PLUS: A little Okkervil River never hurt anyone! I am just digging this band).

I wear my mom badge with pride, but it doesn’t mean I have to check my cool factor at the door. I love great music, amazing books, handmade toys, and sharing it all with you. Contact me at
